Loeffler was a student of Joseph Joachim and Lambert-Joseph Massart, who also taught Wieniawski and Sarasate. Loeffler spent twenty years as assistant concertmaster of the Boston Symphony Orchestra, frequently appearing as a soloist with the BSO. He was a highly regarded teacher who served in an advisory capacity with the founding of the New York Institute of Musical Art and the Juilliard School.

This is the first of a three-volume set of pieces by women composers, past and present. The beginning volume is comprised of pieces corresponding to grade levels 1 and 2 in the ASTA String Syllabus, and features works that have been out-of-print or are newly composed. The intent of the anthology is to provide music written by women for violinists of all skill levels, contributing a collection of fun, pedagogically-sound recital pieces to the available teaching literature. The first volume contains pieces by Josephine Trott and other violinist-teachers of her generation, as well as a commissioned suite by a young composer. Volume 2, Intermediate level ASTA String Syllabus levels 3-4), should be ready be the end of 2009, and will include a previously unpublished work by Marga Richter. Volume 3, Advanced (ASTA String Syllabus levels 5-6), is scheduled for publication in Spring 2010, and will include a newly-commissioned work by Libby Larsen, a movement from Ellen Taaffe Zwilich’s Partita, and a movement from the previously unpublished Violin Sonata by Rebecca Clarke.

Josephine Trott Easy and Progressive Violin Duets

Ms. Trott was a popular and influential violin teacher and composer during the early twentieth century. These are fun first-position duets composed by Trott as part of her out-of-print book Melodious Foundation Studies, adapted and edited by Dr. Cora Cooper. The duets progress in difficulty, with selected technical material from the same book arranged to create “etudes” relating to each duet. Some more sophisticated techniques addressed in these works are syncopation, up- and down-bow staccato, harmonics, fourth-finger extensions, double stops, left-hand pizzicato, and ornaments.
