Bach, C.P.E. "Gott, sieh dein Volk" from Die Israeliten in die Wüsten PDP 029 $12.00 This is a baritone aria with obbligato bassoon from C.P.E. Bach's oratorio The Israelites in the Desert. Bruce Gbur has prepared a piano reduction of the orchestral accompaniment so that this piece may be used for recitals. The set includes two scores and a separate part for bassoon. Cools, Eugéne Prelude and Dance for Oboe and Piano PDP 041 $13.00 This was the oboe testing piece for the Paris Conservatory examinations in 1913. It has been long out of print. Cools was a highly respected composer and teacher who ended up as Director of Publications at the music publisher Max Eschig. Corina, John Divertimento for Contrabassoon and Piano PDP 066 $25.00 John Corina composed this four-movement work in 2000 at the request of Bruce Gbur. The contrabassoon part lies within a two-and-a-half octave range and should be within the technical abilities of an advanced collegiate player. Partita for Solo Oboe PDP 021 $10.00 An accessible modern work in seven movements. One harmonic fingering is used in one movement. Songs of Lanier for Tenor Voice and Oboe PDP 012 $20.00 Four texts by Georgia poet Sidney Lanier set for tenor voice and oboe by composer/oboist John Corina. The set includes two performing scores and eliminates pages turns during the songs. Two Pieces for Oboe and Piano PDP 047 $10.00 John Corina composed these pieces while a composition student of John Boda at Florida State University. They are accessible and enjoyable to play. Some asymmetric meters are employed. Crosby, Richard By The Waters of Memory PDP 024 $4.00 An evocative work for solo piano composed by Richard Crosby, Professor of Piano at Eastern Kentucky University. Elegy for Oboe and Piano PDP 045 $6.00 This is a brief piece written in memory of an oboist and journalism student who was tragically killed in an automobile accident. Davis, William D. Elegy and Dance for Solo Bassoon PDP 008 $14.00 This is a very accessible work including some multiphonics, timbre trills, "feathered" beaming, and quarter-tones. Clear, easily-understood directions for the quarter-tones and timbre trills have been provided by the composer. Dubensky, Arcady Prelude and Fugue for Four Bassoons PDP 013 $16.00 This is one of the first serious works for bassoon ensemble composed in the 20th century. Dubensky was a violinist with the New York Philharmonic who wrote operas, orchestral works, and a wide variety of chamber music. This piece is dedicated to his colleague in the NY Phil, the great bassoonist and pedagogue Simon Kovar. Flament, Edouard. Air and Variations in F major for Two Bassoons, op. 43 PDP 026 $10.00 Originally published as part of Flament's Method for Bassoon, this charming duet is published independently for the first time. Score and two parts Élégie pour basson et orgue, op. 1 PDP 001 $10.00 This is the first known composition specifically for bassoon and organ, written by one of our most distinguished colleagues. The harmonic language is reminiscent of Massenet. This is a beautiful piece, equally appropriate for use in a church service or on a recital. Two Cadenzas for the Mozart Bassoon Concerto, K. 191 PDP 032 $6.00 These were the late Maurice Allard's favorite cadenzas for the Mozart Concerto. Musical, inventive cadenzas for the first and second movements. Gehot, Joseph Six Duettos for Two Violins, op. 6; Vol. I PDP 023 $15.00 Dr. Cora Cooper has edited these three-movement duets by the Belgian violinist and contemporary of Mozart. Volume I contains Duettos 1-3. This publication includes a score as well as separate parts for each violinist. Gillis, Don A Memory for bassoon quartet PDP 015 $10.00 This beautiful quartet was inspired in part by the playing of the young John Miller when he was a student at Interlochen. This edition was prepared from proofs corrected by the composer before his death. Grandval, Marie de Deux pièces pour Clarinette et Piano PDP 084 $13.00 The two pieces in this set (Invocation and Slavic Air) epitomize the Late Romantic style in France. They include many opportunities for individual interpretation and expressive playing. Grand Trio for Oboe, Bassoon, and Piano PDP 038 $48.00 This four-movement work epitomizes French Romanticism. Composed by a student of Flotow and Saint-Saëns, it is one of the first French trios for this combination written by a composer who was not herself an oboist or bassoonist. This is the first modern edition of this piece, now available for the first time in overone hundred years. Greene, Novie Two Irish Songs for Male Voice, Bassoon, and Piano PDP 039 $20.00 Novie Greene is a pianist/composer/vocal teacher in Orlando Florida. She set these two songs (The Breastplate of St. Patrick, O South Wind) for this combination at the request of bassoonist Bruce Gbur and his cousin Edward Searl, who was studying voice with her at the time. The first song has been frequently used for church services. The set includes two scores and a separate bassoon part. Heiden, Berhard Adagio for Bassoon and Piano PDP 032 $15.00 Heiden prepared this elegiac work from the slow movement of his 1948 Concerto for Small Orchestra. He supplemented the original bassoon part with melodic material from other instruments to create an even more effect solo vehicle for the bassoon. This edition is published with the permission of G. Schirmer, Inc./Associated Music Publishers, who hold the copyright to the original orchestra piece. Duo for English Horn and Alto Saxophone PDP 037 $15.00 Prairie Dawg Press received permission from the Indiana University Foundation to publish this piece by Heiden for the first time. Composed in Detroit in 1938, it may also be performed by oboe and B-flat clarinet. The set includes a score and separate parts. Hill, Edward Burlingame Sonatina for Clarinet and Piano PDP 075 $20.00 Hill taught orchestration and a variety of other music classes at Harvard University. His pupils include Leonard Bernstein, Elliott Carter, Irving Fine, Ross Lee Finney, Walter Piston, Virgil Thompson, and Randall Thomson. After his retirement in 1940 Hill left Cambridge for his summer home in New Hampshire and continued to compose. The Sonatina for Clarinet and Piano dates from 1952 and was dedicated to Hill's friend, the clarinetist and fellow composer Burnet C. Tuthill. Hurlstone, William Yeates Variations in G minor for Clarinet, Bassoon, and Piano PDP 002 $18.00 The First Edition of this work by the late romantic English composer. Written when Hurlstone was only eighteen, it displays harmonic imagination, command of form, and the same skilful handling of counterpoint displayed in his Sonata for Bassoon and Piano, Quintet for Winds and Piano, and the Trio in G minor for Clarinet, Bassoon, and Piano. Jancourt, Eugéne Cantiléne, op. 59 PDP 069 $13.00 Many bassoonists consider this piece to be one of Jancourt's loveliest compositions. It employs the bassoon's range from the bottom B-flat to the top one and features several cadenza-like passages in which the soloist can demonstrate their musicianship and emotional depth. Melodic Etude in E minor for Bassoon and Piano, op. 119 PDP 060 $10.00 Jancourt composed several of these melodic etudes to supplement the pedagogical materials he used while teaching at the Paris Conservatory. The very highest portion of the work is provided with an ossia. Reverie, op. 61 PDP 073 $10.00 This work is shorter in length than the Cantiléne, op. 59, but still offers the soloist many opportunities for expressive playing. The work was recorded by bassoonist William D. Davis and fortepianist Beverly Dutton on the Bravura CD label. Romance sans paroles, op. 113 PDP 028 $8.00 Jancourt was one of the most influential of the bassoon professors at the Paris Conservatory. He composed a significant body of repertoire for the bassoon. This lovely Song Without Words emphasizes lyric playing and fluency in the tenor clef. Jeanjean, Paul Duo de Concert PDP 071 $15.00 This work by clarinetist and pedagogue Jeanjean is the first original trio for clarinet, bass clarinet, and piano. It features several passages in octaves between the two wind instruments and a marvelous, Andante solo section for the bass clarinet. Kay, Ulysses Sonata for Bassoon and Piano PDP 003 $11.00 This one-movement piece was composed in 1941 while Kay was studying at Yale with Paul Hindemith. The Sonata for Bassoon and Piano has been unavailable for fifty years and is presented in an easily legible edition. Kirk, Lewis Jig for Bassoon and Tuba PDP 090 $10.00 Bassoonist Lewis Kirk composed this delightful piece in the late 1980s for a joint recital he performed with his brother, the tuba player for the Houston Symphony Orchestra. The tuba player is asked to hum a pitch while playing. Labate, Bruno Polka Intermezzo for Bassoon and Piano PDP 079 $10.00 A charming piece by the Principal Oboist of the New York Philharmonic. Labate is well known among oboists for his pedagogical/recital pieces. This work for bassoon and piano was dedicated to the composer's colleague, Benjamin Kohon, Principal Bassoonist of the NYP. de Lassus, Orlando Tristis est anima mea PDP 005 $8.00 Lassus was one of the greatest composers of the Counter-Reformation, and this is one of his most beautiful motets. The five-part vocal work has been transcribed by Bruce Gbur for double reed quintet or sextet (oboe 1, oboe 2 or oboe d'amore, English horn or bassoon, bassoon 1, bassoon 2, and optional contrabassoon). A translation of the text is included. Loeffler, Charles Martin Violin Studies for the Development of the Left Hand PDP 035 $15.00 Loeffler was a student of Joseph Joachim and Lambert-Joseph Massart, who also taught Wieniawski and Sarasate. Loeffler spent twenty years as assistant concertmaster of the Boston Symphony Orchestra, frequently appearing as a soloist with the BSO. He was a highly regarded teacher who served in an advisory capacity with the founding of the New York Institute of Musical Art and the Juilliard School. He also auditioned prospective students for the violin program at Juilliard but declined several invitations to join their faculty. McKay, George Frederick American Street Scenes PDP 082 $52.00 This quintet for clarinet, alto saxophone, trumpet, bassoon, and piano was composed in 1935. It consists of eight miniature tone poems, all of which are jazz or blues influenced. This is the chamber piece George Gershwin would have written if he'd had better training and more imagination. Molter, Johann Melchior Concerto No. 1 for E-flat Clarinet and Piano PDP 009 $20.00 Concerto No. 3 for E-flat Clarinet and Piano PDP 010 $20.00 Molter is given credit for composing the earliest concertos for clarinet, but that instrument was the piccolo D Clarinet. Dr. K. Tod Kerstetter has retained the original key signature of the solo parts and transposed his piano reductions so that these classics may be played on E-flat clarinet. Players tired of practicing Till and Symphonie fantastique can now test their mettle on original solo repertoire. Mozart, W. A. Adagio from the Basset Clarinet Concerto, K. 622 PDP 006 $10.00 This is the beautiful second movement of Mozart's final wind concerto, made famous by Meryl Streep and Robert Redford in the film Out of Africa. Bruce Gbur has transcribed the "original" basset clarinet version for bassoon and piano. This fits the range of the bassoon wonderfully, from high C to low B-flat. Adagio from the Clarinet Concerto, K. 622 PDP 085 $15.00 Dr. K. Tod Kerstetter has arranged the orchestral accompaniment of this movement for organ to facilitate performances in an ecclesiastical setting. He has included two different organ scores in order to allow the solo part to be played in the original key by either B-flat or A clarinet. Mueller, Robert First Light PDP 091 $14.00 This is an exciting addition to the twentieth-century repertoire for two oboes and English Horn. Robert Mueller is a professor of composition at the University of Arkansas and has written many works for his wife, oboist Theresa Delaplaine. Wisps PDP 083 $15.00 This wonderful work for solo clarinet was composed for Robert Spring, Professor of Clarinet at Arizona State University. The piece is technically challenging but does not require the use of any extended performance techniques. Nabokov, Nicolas Sonata for Bassoon and Piano PDP 106 $24.00 The Russian-American composer Nabokov was an important figure in American musical life during the 1940-1970s. This two-movement Sonata displays the influence of his good friend Stravinsky as well as Shostakovich. This is a significant addition to the twentieth-century solo repertoire. d'Ollone, Max Romance et Tarentelle pour Basson et Piano PDP 036 $13.00 This work is another of the Paris Conservatory contest pieces (1928) that have fallen into undeserved obscurity. A great selection for a recital or jury. Orefici, Alberto Adagio for Bassoon and Piano PDP 018 $7.00 Orefici was a student of Jancourt at the Paris Conservatory. He Followed his teacher's example by composing the well-known Melodic Studies and Bravura Studies for bassoon. It is not widely known that Orefici composed several pieces for solo bassoon and piano. This Adagio was originally published in Paris in the first decade of the twentieth century. Two Pieces for Bassoon and Piano [Elegy & Scherzo] PDP 017 $15.00 This is the Fist Edition of these two works by the Italian virtuoso and pedagogue Alberto Orefici. They both display his fondness for "flat-heavy" tonalities and idiomatic writing for the bassoon. Ott, David Suite for Bassoon and Piano PDP 007 $24.00 The three-movement Suite for Bassoon and Piano was commissioned in honor of Christopher Weait's retirement from The Ohio State University. David Ott has served as composer-in-residence of the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra and has been nominated twice for the Pulitzer Prize in Music. Owen, Blythe Diversion for Bassoon and Piano (or Harpsichord), op. 42, No. 1 PDP 089 $14.00 Dr. Blythe Owen had teaching career that spanned almost eighty years. She was the first woman to receive a doctorate in composition from the Eastman School of Music. Her holograph states "for Bassoon and Harpsichord (or Piano)" but contains a wealth of dynamic indications not possible on the harpsichord. The editor recommends that an electronic keyboard be used to achieve both the harpsichord timbre and the given dynamics. Reynolds, Verne Fantasy-Etudes for Bassoon and Percussion PDP 068 $38.00 This is one of the most significant works in the bassoon/percussion repertoire. The edition is a reproduction of the composer's holograph printed on high-quality 11 X 17 paper. It is unbound to facilitate page turns/slides and contains two full copies of the piece as well as copies of the pages needed for the second percussionist. The piece has been recorded by Judith LeClaire of the New York Philharmonic and will be recorded again in October 2008 by Dr. Christin Schillinger of the University of Nevada, Reno. Solus for Unaccompanied Trumpet PDP 092 $13.00 This work was composed on a commission from trumpeter Mark Ponzo for inclusion on his compact disc The Trumpet Music of Verne Reynolds (Mark Masters 4843-MCD). Each of the five movements is meant to be performed on a different instrument. The performer should have access to trumpets in C, B-flat, and E-flat, a Flugelhorn, and B-flat Cornet. The performer may present selected movements. Sonata for Bassoon and Piano PDP 051 $30.00 Reynolds composed this work in 1999 as a contribution to the 20th-century repertoire of the bassoon. This is a dark and serious work for the most part. The three movements are technically and musically challenging. Sonata for Clarinet and Piano PDP 080 $33.00 The Clarinet Sonata was composed in 1987 for Kenneth Grant during his first year as Professor of Clarinet at the Eastman School of Music. The work is in four movements and displays the composer's synthesis of a variety of compositional techniques. The technical challenges presented in this work place it firmly in the repertoire of professional players and advanced graduate students. Sidorfsky, Frank Morsel for Clarinet and Piano PDP 073 $10.00 A charming, witty piece by Frank Sidorfsky, Emeritus Professor of Clarinet at Kansas State University. This work is perfect for inclusion on a recital or as an encore. Psalm for Mezzo-Soprano and Clarinet PDP 086 $12.00 This setting of Pslam 67 was written for use in church or recital. The set includes a vocal score with the B-flat clarinet part and that line transposed to concert pitch so the vocalist can rehearse with a piano. A separate part for the clarinetust is also provided. Siennicki, Edmund The Peace Bird PDP 070 $15.00 This beautiful work for two bassoons and piano was composed in the late 1940s after the conclusion of WW II. The piece features Impressionistic harmonies in the piano part and chains of suspensions between the two bassoons. Stupp, Mark A. Charlie is My Darling: Variations on a Scottish Folksong for Bassoon and Piano PDP 034 $14.00 Charlie is My Darling: Variations on a Scottish Folksong, was composed for Dan Duncan. The minor-mode tune dates back to the final Jacobite rebellion (19 August 1745 through 16 April 1746). Mark Stupp set this piece as a theme and six variations utilizing his own Late Romantic harmonic language. He departed from the tune's traditional sound by setting the final variation in the major mode. Prairie Dawg Press is pleased to offer the first publication of this appealing work. Morning Has Broken: Reflections on a Gaelic Melody PDP 042 $8.00 This is s setting of the familiar hymn tune, suitable for use in a church service or as part of a recital set. Tango in D minor for Oboe and Piano PDP 031 $14.00 Mark Stupp wrote this piece long before the current "Tango Craze" hit the double reed world. He wrote the work for Dr. Dan Duncan when they were both on the faculty of Texas A & I University in Kingsville, TX. Great recital piece! Van der Slice, John Duo for Contrabassoon and Piano PDP 040 $26.00 This exciting work was commissioned by internationally-known contrabassoon- ist Henry Skolnick. It was performed by Skolnick on his recital at the 2007 I.D.R.S. Conference in Ithaca, NY and has been recorded by him for Albany Records (TROY 870) with pianist José Lopez. Verroust, Stanislas Second Concert Solo for Oboe and Piano, op. 74 PDP 061 $14.00 Stanislas Verroust was an oboe student of the legendary Gustav Vogt at the Paris Conservatory. Like Vogt, he composed an impressive body of works for oboe and English Horn, including 12 Concert Solos for Oboe and Piano. The Second Solo has been long out of print. A slow section in G minor is followed by a delightful rondo in G major. Perfect recital material! Theme and Variations for English Horn and Piano, op. 23 PDP 058 $14.00 An Introduction leads to a happy-go-lucky theme which Verroust utilizes for three variations. Well-written music for the English Horn but not as demanding technically as the Donizetti. Zaninelli, Luigi The Pobble Who Has No Toes PDP 014 $13.00 This delightful "Entertainment for Contrabassoon, Narrator and Dinner Bell" uses the well-known nonsense poem by Edward Lear. The music of Luigi Zaninelli needs no introduction to any serious musician, but you may be surprised at this composer's whimsical side as he brings this story to life. The set includes a score and separate contrabassoon part.
