Novie Greene is a pianist/composer/vocal teacher in Orlando Florida. She set these two songs (The Breastplate of St. Patrick, O South Wind) for this combination at the request of bassoonist Bruce Gbur and his cousin Edward Searl, who was studying voice with her at the time. The first song has been frequently used for church services. The set includes two scores and a separate bassoon part.

Heiden prepared this elegiac work from the slow movement of his 1948 Concerto for Small Orchestra. He supplemented the original bassoon part with melodic material from other instruments to create an even more effect solo vehicle for the bassoon. This edition is published with the permission of G. Duo for English Horn and Alto Saxophone

Hill taught orchestration and a variety of other music classes at Harvard University. His pupils include Leonard Bernstein, Elliott Carter, Irving Fine, Ross Lee Finney, Walter Piston, Virgil Thompson, and Randall Thomson. After his retirement in 1940 Hill left Cambridge for his summer home in New Hampshire and continued to compose. The Sonatina for Clarinet and Piano dates from 1952 and was dedicated to Hill's friend, the clarinetist and fellow composer Burnet C. Tuthill.

Many bassoonists consider this piece to be one of Jancourt's loveliest compositions. It employs the bassoon's range from the bottom B-flat to the top one and features several cadenza-like passages in which the soloist can demonstrate their musicianship and emotional depth.

Lassus was one of the greatest composers of the Counter-Reformation, and this is one of his most beautiful motets. A translation of the text is included.



Loeffler, Charles Martin
Violin Studies for the Development of the Left Hand

Loeffler was a student of Joseph Joachim and Lambert-Joseph Massart, who also taught Wieniawski and Sarasate. Loeffler spent twenty years as assistant concertmaster of the Boston Symphony Orchestra, frequently appearing as a soloist with the BSO. He was a highly regarded teacher who served in an advisory capacity with the founding of the New York Institute of Musical Art and the Juilliard School. He also auditioned prospective students for the violin program at Juilliard but declined several invitations to join their faculty.

Molter is given credit for composing the earliest concertos for clarinet, but that instrument was the piccolo D Clarinet. Dr. K. Tod Kerstetter has retained the original key signature of the solo parts and transposed his piano reductions so that these classics may be played on E-flat clarinet. Players tired of practicing Till and Symphonie fantastique can now test their mettle on original solo repertoire.

Adagio from the Basset Clarinet Concerto, K. 622

This is the beautiful second movement of Mozart's final wind concerto, made famous by Meryl Streep and Robert Redford in the film Out of Africa. Bruce Gbur has transcribed the "original" basset clarinet version for bassoon and piano. This fits the range of the bassoon wonderfully, from high C to low B-flat.

Orefici was a student of Jancourt at the Paris Conservatory. He Followed his teacher's example by composing the well-known Melodic Studies and Bravura Studies for bassoon. It is not widely known that Orefici composed several pieces for solo bassoon and piano. This Adagio was originally published in Paris in the first decade of the twentieth century.

Dr. Blythe Owen had teaching career that spanned almost eighty years. She was the first woman to receive a doctorate in composition from the Eastman School of Music. Her holograph states "for Bassoon and Harpsichord (or Piano)" but contains a wealth of dynamic indications not possible on the harpsichord. The editor recommends that an electronic keyboard be used to achieve both the harpsichord timbre and the given dynamics.

This is one of the most significant works in the bassoon/percussion repertoire. The edition is a reproduction of the composer's holograph printed on high-quality 11 X 17 paper. It is unbound to facilitate page turns/slides and contains two full copies of the piece as well as copies of the pages needed for the second percussionist. The piece has been recorded by Judith LeClaire of the New York Philharmonic and will be recorded again in October 2008 by Dr. Christin Schillinger of the University of Nevada, Reno.



Solus for Unaccompanied Trumpet

Charlie is My Darling: Variations on a Scottish Folksong, was composed for Dan Duncan. The minor-mode tune dates back to the final Jacobite rebellion (19 August 1745 through 16 April 1746). Mark Stupp set this piece as a theme and six variations utilizing his own Late Romantic harmonic language. He departed from the tune's traditional sound by setting the final variation in the major mode. Prairie Dawg Press is pleased to offer the first publication of this appealing work.
